The importance of keeping hydrated

For those of you who have seen me in clinic before I always mention about drinking water post treatment and check that you are keeping yourself hydrated, but why does it matter?

It’s estimated up to 60% of the human body is made up of water, it is essential to our survival. It is needed for a number of functions in the body including;

  • carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells

  • aiding digestion

  • normalising blood pressure

  • protecting organs and tissues

  • regulating body temperature

  • cushioning joints

  • maintaining electrolyte balance

Keeping hydrated will also help your spinal health as the discs in your spine are filled with fluid, so if you are dehydrated then this can impact your spinal health.

It’s recommended that you drink between 2-3 litres of water per day, and this doesn’t include your teas and coffees as caffeine can dehydrate your body. So my advice is to do what I do and always keep a water bottle with you to remind you to keep drinking, try drinking 2-3 litres per day and see how much better you feel for it.

Happy health
